June Events in Southern Maryland

As we move into the summer months, Southern Maryland comes alive with festivals and community events celebrating art, music, and culture. Here are some of the best events you won’t want to miss this June:


When: Saturday, June 8, 2019; 11AM – 5PM

Where: La Plata Town Hall, 305 Queen Anne Street, La Plata, MD


This year marks the 27th anniversary of ArtsFest. They’ll kick off the summer season on the beautiful grounds of the La Plata Town Hall, celebrating the arts with a family-friendly festival. It’s the largest art festival in Charles County, with both literary and visual artists displaying and selling their unique works. They’ll have live entertainment on two stages, interactive art activities, and a variety of food options. Make sure to mark this exciting community event on your calendar.


Maritime Performance Series: John Conolly & Rob van Sante

When: Friday, June 14, 2019; 6PM – 9PM

Where: Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD


Towards the middle of the month, head over to the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons for an evening of music at their 2019 Spring Maritime Performance Series. On this evening, the internationally-recognized John Conolly and Rob van Sante will be performing British folk music for visitors to enjoy. Expect an entertaining performance, with songs that are thought-provoking and fun. You’ll want to purchase your tickets ahead for this event.

Dee of St. Mary’s Public Sail

When: Saturday, June 22, 2019; 2:30 – 4:30PM

Where: Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD


The following weekend at the Calvert Marine Museum, visitors can set sail on the Dee of St. Mary’s. It’s a historic sailing skipjack that’s used in the museum’s Chesapeake Bay Field Lab programs. They’ll be offering a 2-hour public sail on this afternoon. It’s weather permitting, and all sails will take off from the CMM dock. Participants can help raise and lower the sail as they experience the beautiful Patuxent River. Be sure to make your reservations ahead as they require registration by noon on the Friday prior to the sail.


2019 River Concert Series

When: Fridays June 21 & 28, 2019; 7:00PM, Grounds open at 5:00PM

Where: Townhouse Green, 47760 College Drive, St Mary’s City, MD


The annual River Concert Series is kicking off this month at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and you won’t want to miss it. It’s their 21st year hosting this free family-friendly event on the Townhouse Green, and this month, they’ll have two Friday evenings of entertainment. On June 21st, you can enjoy “The Travel Program”, an evening of music from world capitals like Paris, Budapest, St. Petersburg, and Delhi. The following Friday, they’ll host “The Art of Dance”, where visitors can listen to the music of Les Sylphides, Chopin, Arvo Pärt, and Ballet Caliente with the Chesapeake Orchestra. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and you can also bring your own refreshments.

Summer Concert Series – La Plata

When: Every Friday in June, (7, 14, 21, 28), 2019; 7:00PM

Where: The lawn at La Plata Town Hall, 305 Queen Anne Street, La Plata, MD


This month in La Plata, catch their Summer Concert Series each Friday evening. It will take place on the lawn at La Plata Town Hall, so make sure to pack a blanket or some chairs to sit comfortably. You can bring your own food and beverages to this event, and they’ll also have concessions available. This is a family-friendly event with a Kids’ Zone play area for the younger ones to enjoy. Check their event page for all the details on bands and musical groups, but you can expect a range in genres from Classic Rock to Hip Hop to Broadway and Country music.
