August Events in Southern Maryland

August is full of wonderful events to celebrate your last month of summer vacation in Southern Maryland. Whether you’re looking for fun in the sun, cultural and historical activities, art, or music, we have you covered. Here are just a few fun options to choose from:

LEONARDTOWN SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Where: Leonardtown Square, 22670 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650
When: Friday, August 2 @ 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, August 3 @ 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The Leonardtown Summer Music Festival is an amazing chance for you and the entire family to get together and enjoy some great music. The majority of the concerts are free, and the festival offers something for everyone, from family-friendly events to more adult-oriented evenings. Participating restaurants in town provide picnics on specific nights, and other businesses have a program called Drop N’ Dine, where children will be entertained with activities while parents get to have a night away. Make sure you don’t miss the last month of these amazing festivities!

NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE WEEKEND

PINEY POINT LIGHTHOUSE

Where: Piney Point Lighthouse Museum & Historic Park, 44720 Lighthouse Road, Piney Point, MD 20674
When: Saturday, August 3 @ 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, August 4 @ 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Piney Point Lighthouse is offering a free weekend of tours in honor of National Lighthouse Day, which is celebrated annually on August 7th. There’s going to be multiple tours to choose from, including the Potomac River Maritime Exhibit, the museum, and the lighthouse tower; the keeper’s quarters and grounds will offer special tours as well.

BLACKISTONE LIGHTHOUSE

Where: St. Clement’s Island Museum, 38370 Point Breeze Road, Coltons Point, MD 20626
When: Saturday, August 3 @ 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, August 4 @ 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Blackistone Lighthouse will also be offering a free weekend of tours in honor of National Lighthouse Day. Tour St. Clements Island, the Lighthouse, as well as a replica of the original lighthouse that stood at the same location. Plan ahead to make sure you get there by 2 p.m. to catch the last boat to St. Clements Island.

BEACH PARTY ON THE SQUARE

Where: Leonardtown Square & Leonardtown Wharf Park, 22735 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650
When: Saturday, August 3 @ 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

With over 40 tons of sand, the Leonardtown Square will be transformed into a one-of-a-kind beach party full of activities such as beach volleyball, tug-o-war, and paddle boarding. There’s also going to be live music, delicious food, and street performers for you and the entire family to enjoy. This is a free event, so make sure to make it down for some summer fun!

SHAKESPHERE IN THE CITY: JULIUS CAESAR

Where: State House Lawn, 47418 Old State House Rd, St Mary’s City, MD 20686
When: Friday, August 9 @ 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Saturday, August 10 @ 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Historic St. Mary’s City and The Newtowne Players present a unique outdoor theatrical experience of the tragic Julius Caesar on the State House lawn. Come and enjoy a great opportunity to see Shakespeare under the stars. You can buy tickets when you arrive, or advance tickets can be purchased on The Newtowne Players’ website.

COASTAL ARTS MARKET AT THE WHARF

Where: Leonardtown Wharf, 22550 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650
When: Saturday, August 17 @ 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This outdoor arts market is full of artistic and creative vendors, all selling their unique and handcrafted wares. Set on the stunning Leonardtown Wharf, this market is especially distinct, as only handcrafted items are allowed, ensuring you’ll get some amazing wares from the vendors. Explore the park and shop to your heart’s content.

CHILDREN’S DAY AT ST. CLEMENT’S ISLAND MUSEUM

Where: St. Clement’s Island Museum, 38370 Point Breeze Road, Coltons Point, MD 20626
When: Saturday, August 17 @ 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

St. Clement’s Island Museum invites you to participate in a free, family-fun day filled with plenty of activities. Set on the picturesque waterside lawn of the museum, enjoy games, crafts, face painting, a bike raffle, snow cones, balloons, and even more as you have an unforgettable day with your family.

 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOUTHERN MARYLAND WINE, JAZZ, R&B AND FUNK FESTIVAL 

Where: Calvert County Fairground, 140 Calvert Fair Dr., Prince Frederick, MD 20678
When: Saturday, August 17 @ 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Come on out for a day of great music accompanied by your favorite wine, beer, or spirits. Food vendors will be serving up some tasty treats and there will be lawn games and a water slide to cool you down on a hot day. What a great way to celebrate the 5th anniversary of this amazing event!
